'Polarity' Ceramic, 117cm
Sandra Robinson is a recent graduate (2009) of Fine & Applied Arts from the University of Ulster, Belfast. 'Polarity' is one of a series by Sandra, exuding confidence, strength and fragility 'Polarity' is a majestic work from this undoubted star of the future.
Questioning the manifestation of the “masculine” as an icon of strength, power and control within modern society, I explore the myth of masculinity outside of its usual paradigms, instead placing it within the seeming dichotomy of strength and weakness. By utilizing the inherent contradictions that exist between masculinity and fragility, if I can expose the fragility in this idealised masculine form, I consequently expose the fragility of the human form and violate the myth.
The importance of the making process of using my hands is paramount to the authenticity of my work, and as such I avoid using moulds or casts, that would otherwise take away from my physical involvement with the piece. It also maintains my attempt to control the work as my hands are physically shaping the work, and my presence is recorded in the marks I make. By creating each piece by hand, no two can be the same which corresponds with humanity and individuality. By making a series of pieces which are all linked in their similarity but have slight differences creates a symbol of humanity, which find their common connection through their intrinsic characteristic of fragility.
